Core Tip: The Spanish region of Murcia produces 220,000 tonnes of broccoli per year, which represents half of the domestic production, reported the Councillor of Agriculture.
The Spanish region of Murcia produces 220,000 tonnes of broccoli per year, which represents half of the domestic production, reported the Councillor of Agriculture, Adela Martinez-Cachá, in her closing speech at the Seventh General Assembly of the Association +broccoli.

The Councillor, together with the president of that organization, Rafael Martínez, stated that Murcia has about 12,000 hectares devoted to the production of broccoli from the 26,000 hectares existing in Spain. This represents 45 percent of the country's total acreage and almost 10 percent of Europe's.

She also stressed that, in recent years, "there has been a significant increase in the export of broccoli and the European market is receiving 90 percent of the production."

The Councillor stressed that research is an "essential tool to further promote this product by facilitating improvements in the yield, in the varieties and in the processing industry."

The Council of Water, Agriculture and Environment is working through the IMIDA to sign a cooperation agreement with broccoli producers and exporters in the region. The goal is to obtain new varieties and genetically improve this product, which has allowed Murcia to become a global leader in overseas sales.
