Bananas and apples are sales leaders
In 2015 18,676 tons of organic bananas were sold, and they are the undisputed leader in the organic segment. Bananas increased their lead over the organic apples, which are the second most sold organic fruit with 4,091 tons. In terms of turnover bananas increased their lead too. This increase of turnover is mainly due to an increase in sold volume, as the average price of organic bananas has dropped with 2.8%. The price of organic apples increased slightly with 1.4% in 2015 compared to 2014.
Citrus fruit and soft fruit: increased sales, decreased prices
Similar to bananas, the increase in sales of citrus and soft fruits coincided with a decrease in price. Compared to the previous year the 2015 turnover of each fruit variety developed differently. For instance organic blueberries have achieved a sales growth of 3.6 million CHF (+44%), despite a price decline of about 4%, due to an increase in sales of 171 tons (+51%). On the other hand organic strawberries barely achieved an increase in retail turnover with a decrease in price of 6% and an increase of volume of 6.8%.
2015 was the year of the avocado
While the prices slightly increased (+0.6%) almost 80% more organic avocados were sold in 2015. And with 7.1 million CHF avocados reached fifth place (+4) in the ranking of best selling organic fruit and surpassed the organic oranges.
