Poland's vegetable production volume in 2016 may increase compared to the previous year. According to forecasts from the IAFE-NRI, it appears that the total volume could amount to 4.09 million tonnes and be about 7.8% greater than a year ago. This growth is largely due to both an increase in the planted acreage and the rising yields, stated Mariusz Dziwulski, expert analyst of agricultural markets at BGZ BNP Paribas.
According to the IAFE-NRI, the acreage will increase by 2.3% and reach 179.5 thousand hectares. Meanwhile, the yields will not actually record a sharp increase due to adverse meteorological conditions in the spring, but there will be some growth in the harvest of onions (+15.6%), cauliflowers (+14.9%) red beets (+11.1%) and cabbage (+8.9%).
The final levels achieved will depend mostly on the conditions in the remainder of the season. However, if these forecasts are correct, we can expect a drop in vegetable prices in the 2016/2017 campaign.
