Red Chinese cabbage debuted on the Polish market for the first time ever this year, and producer Vega Fresh is the exclusive importer of the seeds for the Polish market. The seeds come from a company out of the Netherlands called Wing seed and commercial sales have started for two varieties, Scarlette F1 (WS 4402) and (WS 4401). Both of these varieties will be cultivated this year, with an early variety to start next year.
Radosław Piotrowski, CEO of Vega Fresh shared that major supermarkets Kaufland and Biedronka have shown great interest.
"Red Chinese cabbage has a slightly different flavour than the green varieties. It is crispier, slightly resembling iceberg lettuce. Another advantage is that it is sweet, does not lose volume and doesn't stain when mixed with other greens. The cabbage is very unique and we think that it has great potential." said Piotrowski.
The cabbage has also been hailed as a great alternative to red lettuce or radicchio in salad bags, with the advantage of a mild flavour and being less prone to oxidisation (browning). It is also appealing to chefs who will be able to use bright pink inner leaves to garnish meals.
Vega Fresh exports their vegetables across the EU, eastern markets and also to Scandinavia. Along with Scarlette F1, they also have a modern line for packing broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage. The modern packing line is crucial so that we are able to ensure the quality of the products shipped and significantly extend their shelf life.
