Salmonella infections can be serious, especially in young children and people with health problems and compromised immune systems. The symptoms of a Salmonella infection include vomiting, nausea, diarrhea that may be bloody, fever, and abdominal cramps. Those symptoms usually begin six to seventy-two hours after exposure to the bacteria.

The illness usually lasts four to seven days. Most people recover without medical treatment, but some, especially those in high risk groups, can suffer serious complications from this illness. If you or your child has been sick with these symptoms, see your doctor. The long term complications of this type of infection can be serious, including reactive arthritis, high blood pressure, and irritable bowel syndrome.
