"Compared to last year, the Chinese banana production has grown by 10%. The banana import from the Philippines has not changed much, but the import from South American countries, like Ecuador, has dropped 50%. This is mainly because large quantities of imported bananas from South America were rotten on arrival because of improper transportation and storage. Therefore, many traders have suffered severe losses," states Mr. Xu Zhihua from Beijing Yong Xin Heng Chang Fruit Co Ltd.
"This would normally be the peak season for bananas in Beijing. This year, however, it is the complete opposite. Currently, the banana price in Beijing is very low. This is because suppliers have large quantities of bananas in storage. From the start of the new banana season in September, all these bananas entered the market, especially those from China, which has impacted the market. I believe that this will continue for another month, after which the market will gradually return to normal."
"Our company was established in 2009. We distribute and process bananas, and have a total production area of around 6,000 hectares (60,000 mu), spread over Guangxi, Hainan and Yunnan. All of our bananas are sold under our brand "Yong Xin Heng Chang" to places all over China. To guarantee our product quality, our technical team regularly visits our production sites for quality control. Furthermore, we also import bananas from the Philippines and Ecuador. Our main breeds are Banabay, Banasoft, Hoya, Aurora and Chiquita. These imported bananas are sold to distributors and supermarkets in Beijing, Shanghai and Anhui, who then sell them in Hebei, Shanxi and Dongbei."
