The total crop of mandarins in Nanfeng is expected to reach 1.5 billion kilos, up by 50% compared to last year. The rainfall in August this year has been ample and hence the mandarins have grown well. Even though most of them are not yet ready, their market prices this year are expected to be similar to last year. However, the market will have the final say.
Affected by the relatively low amount of rainfall, the sizes of Nanfeng mandarins this year are mostly smaller, but the level of sugar content is higher and taste is very good. A few growers have already started to sell their mandarins. The early-ripe ones are available now at around 1.2 yuan per kilo and the others at 0.9 yuan. With living standards improving and prices rising, many growers are also expanding the size of their orchards.
