A great harvest of grapes grown in Silifke, Mersin, a city located in southern Turkey, are selling at 0.75 USD per kg at retail. Another grape production region is in Antalya, where organically grown grapes from Yazir are being harvested from a production area of 5 million square feet and sold at the local market.
Grape production also attracted the interest of a Turkish entrepreneur about 10 years ago who sold his restaurant and started growing grapes. Now he is one of the biggest growers in the region with a production area of 400,000 square feet and annually grows more than 100 tons of grapes. The grower sells his grapes at 0.30 USD whereas the price rises up to 0.60 USD at retail.
Grape production is also attracting tourists and may be starting a new trend in ecotourism where tourists visit grape production fields and personally harvest grapes and enjoy the experience of being in nature. Especially Chinese tourists are showing a great deal interest in this experience.
