Silifke is located in southern Turkey and is known for its agricultural production. The harvest season for figs lasts for 2 months and the production takes place in an area of 2 million square feet and the annual production from Silifke is around 960 tons.
The government is also doing its best to support fig growers in various regions. In Aydin, an important city for fig production, government has provided cooling tunnels for 6 growers. However growers are still seeking additional support from the government in Aydin after heavy rain damage to figs in recent weeks. Growers asked for a delay of their debts to state banks to survive financially. Aydin has received 10 times more rain than usual this summer, which has damaged a lot of figs and caused problems for growers.
Another important fig production area is in Bursa, located in northwestern Turkey. Here the world famous black figs are grown and export permission for this year’s crop has been received from authorities. The price at the export market is around 1.1 USD per kg and the products are exported not only to European countries but also to Japan and China.
