According to a state think tank, prices of key vegetables in South Korea are expected to continue to go up in September. Prices of Chinese cabbage are forecast to average 13,000 won (US$11.6) per 10 kilograms this month, about 1.3 times higher than usual, according to the Korea Rural Economic Institute.

Radishes are likely to fetch 22,000 won per 20 kg (US$19.6), twice as expensive as normal, while the cost of carrots could triple to 75,000 per 20 kg (US$66.7).

The gloomy forecast comes as prices of 21 vegetables increased 4.1 percent as of August 31 compared with a week earlier, in the wake of a prolonged heat wave and recent heavy rains.

The price of green onions spiked 23.7 percent, the biggest gain of all, followed by squash with 18.2 percent, radishes with 14.4 percent, ginger with 11.4 percent and Chinese cabbage with 9.9 percent, according to the Korean Consumer Agency.
