“Our season started on the 1st of August and will last at least till  December this year. It’s expected that there will a big increase in terms of the total exported volumes. It will rise till approximately 76.000 tons, which means Peru will have 60% more blueberry export than the previous season”, starts Maurice Novion, the Founder and general manager from Gaulos Soluciones, Peru.

He explains that previous season the volumes rose approximately 47.000 compared to the year before. “Even though the volumes rise, we still expect a good season in 2018. We have more volume available, but there is as well a higher demand for the fruit worldwide. For example, China is very interested in blueberries lately. Being one of the biggest economies in the world, they will of course try to get as much volume as possible to their country, from both Chilean and Peruvian origin.”

Up till now the biggest importers of Peruvian blueberries are the United States, Europe via the Netherlands and now China. “Recently a new country opened up for the import of Peruvian blueberries. The Chilean SAG ( Servicio Agrícola y Ganadero) approved the import of Peruvian blueberry as from 2018 in a particular move to sort domestic market. Chile is one big players in blueberries, with the Chilean controlled giant Hortifrut holding 25% of the worldwide blueberry market. Hortifrut has huge operations in Chile and Peru.”
