The Tripura government has planned to focus on marketing delicious and juicy oranges of the state. Furthermore, they see the orchards as a way of promoting tourism, said Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb today after opening 6th Orange Festival at Killa of Gomati district.
The Chief Minister began the festival by plucking ripen oranges, distributing them among the people.
After this, Deb held a speech, stating that Tripura oranges had bagged 1st prize in the Delhi Food festival way back in 1980, but unfortunately no initiatives had been taken to market the oranges at a national level. As a result, Indians and outsiders kept believing the best oranges are produced only in Nagpur.
Deb went on to state that the present government has decided to encourage orange cultivation and create markets for it. At present, Tripura produced about 650 million tons of oranges in 2016-17. This will probably double for 2017-18.
