A couple of days ago, the president of the Provincial Council of Huelva, Ignacio Caraballo, opened a Conference dedicated to asparagus cultivation in the province of Huelva. At the event, held in the municipality of Villarrasa, he reiterated the institution's commitment to a pioneering project in the province, which will materialize into a specific line of economic aid to encourage growers in the area to diversify their crops with the planting of asparagus.

The president of the Provincial Council, who was accompanied by the mayor of Villarrasa, Ildefonso Martín, recalled that a visit to Palma del Río, in Córdoba, was already made by some Mayors and Councillors. The goal was to learn first-hand about the possibilities for the planting of asparagus in their municipalities. Also, meetings were held between managers of the company Guadex and producers of the County region in order to study and analyze the crop's opportunities and potential in the province of Huelva.

Caraballo said that the Provincial Council is implementing the strategic lines for the coming years, designed within the framework of the Provincial Strategic Plan. The objective is "to support the diversification of the province's agricultural sector, promoting studies on the market situation and on the profitability of new varieties and agricultural crops."

"The diversification of agriculture is not only an opportunity, it is also a necessity, because diversification is synonymous with growth, competitiveness and sustainability," he added.

The aid provided by the Provincial Council will range between 1,500 to 2,000 Euro per hectare of asparagus, with a global budget of 100,000 Euro in 2018.
