Alanya, one of the main tourist districts within the city of Antalya, is starting to emerge also as an important agricultural production center. The district is especially gaining more importance in tropical fruit production, such as avocados and loquats. One of the main sources of income in the district is banana growing.
Banana production areas continue to rapidly increase with every passing day. According to the information provided by Alanya Banana Growers Association Chairman Mustafa Senli, there are currently 515 hectares of banana greenhouses in addition to 775 hectares of open banana production fields.
Mustafa Senli: “Currently our growers produce 31,000 tons in greenhouses and 31,000 tons in open production fields annually. Thus in total we can talk about 62,000 tons of bananas grown annually in 1.290 hectares. Alanya was known for citrus fruit production but a lot of growers are transforming their citrus fruit gardens to banana greenhouses, due to their profitability. Citrus fruit production has completely shifted to Adana region.
Currently there are 1,200 banana growers in Alanya and 200 of them are registered with our association. “
