In the Philippines, a farmer was caught on video dumping at least a ton of unsold carrots. According to the farmer, there was an oversupply of carrots and the demand was low in La Trinidad, Benguet. That was the reason the price of carrots dropped in the first week of January.
Prices of highland vegetables decreased by ₱1.00 to ₱15.00 (€0.25) per kilogram.
One problem that the farmers noticed is that only a few buyers go to Benguet Agri Pinoy Trading Center (BAPTC) where farmers deliver their yield based on the directive of the local government. Because of this, the farmers want to deliver to the old trading post where most buyers go. There is also lack of crop programming in the new trading post which leads to oversupply.
At present, the supply and prices of vegetables at the trading post have returned to normal because farmers have stopped harvesting. However, they fear that similar problems of spoiled vegetables might happen again if the government will not act on a solution.
