According to Beijing News, cherries were trending in the fruit market during Chinese Spring Festival [February 5th, 2019], but the price of mangosteens, unexpectedly dropped by more than 50% from 360 yuan [53.20 USD] per 5 kg to 150 yuan [22.17].

One trader explained that the current mangosteen supply mainly comes from Thailand. Many people in Southeast Asia believe that mangosteen is beneficial for one's health. The fruit is therefore usually as popular as durian.

Mangosteen ripens between May and October. The main season for mangosteen consumption is in May and June. The sudden drop in prices, however, has cooled the enthusiasm of traders for this fruit. The price of mangosteen is normally at a low point in May and June, so if the price is already this low in February, then it may become impossible for traders to make a profit on mangosteen in May and June.
