There are two main banana varieties outside of China, the Cavendish and the Lacatan. The global production volume of Cavendish bananas is around 55 million tons, which is around 47% of the total banana production volume.
Lacatan is a regional specialty in the Philippines. This banana is not yet for sale in China, and Chinese consumers are therefore not yet familiar with this banana. Furthermore, the production volume of Lacatan in the Philippines is not that large. From the outside the banana looks the same as others, yellow, but the Lacatan is slightly smaller than most bananas commonly seen in the market.
The Lacatan is a dwarf banana. The banana plant is generally more than 3 meters tall, the fruit is relatively straight, and the production volume per plant is high. The Lacatan banana has a high resistance against Panama disease, but is susceptible to Sigatoka leaf spot. There are large Lacatan banana plantations in Central and South America, and it is also the main export banana variety in the Philippines.
