Juan Camilo Restrepo Gomez, the President of the Colombian Banana Association (AUGURA), stated that Colombia was shipping bananas to the Asian continent for the first time.
Restrepo Gomez said on a radio show that "Colombian bananas are reaching the Chinese market, a market of more than 1,300 million inhabitants, for the first time. I think that this is very positive news," he said.
According to the official, the shipment "the first contract with China has been signed and we hope that it will materialize this year and hopefully we'll be able to open the market in that latitude to our agricultural products."
Restrepo assured that "this is a way that could allow us to quickly open the market to coffee, flowers, citrus fruits, or avocados."
"The European Union is the main destination for our tropical fruit, followed by the United States," he said.
"After coffee and flowers, bananas are Colombia's third agricultural product that generates the most income for the country."
He also stressed that at present, the Urabá Antioqueño was responsible for exporting more than two million tons.
