"China mainly imports grapefruit from Israel, Egypt, Spain, and South Africa. The production season in South Africa already finished in early January, so most of the grapefruits are currently imported from the other countries. The current supply volume is limited, which is why the price increased. The price has actually entered a peak period. However, we estimate that the supply of grapefruit will increase in April and at that time the price will come down." This is according to Jiang Minghai of Shanghai Sea Fruit Trading Co., Ltd.
"The lemon market is very different from the grapefruit market. The supply volume is huge and the price relatively low around 3-4 yuan [0.45-0.60 USD] per 0.5 kg. When the supply volume in China is relatively low, we import a small volume of lemons from Thailand and Vietnam. This usually occurs in August and September. The price of lemons then rises because supply is insufficient."
"Green lemons currently sell better than yellow lemons in the Chinese market. They are put to different uses which explains the difference in market demand. Traders buy green lemons, while restaurants and milk tea shops prefer yellow lemons."
