In a bid to stop the exploding prices, onions will be imported from Egypt to Mumbai this week. Various states have sent letter in this regard to the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED), an apex organization of marketing cooperatives for agricultural produce in India.
Kerala demanded for 460 tons of onions. The state pointed out in the letter sent to NAFED that 115 tons are required here per week. Among this, 300 tons will be purchased by Civil Supplies Corporation and 160 tons by Horticorp.
Onion will be brought to Mumbai port between December 10 and 17. According to NAFED, the onion price in Mumbai will be fixed between Rs 60 - 65. When the onions are brought to Kerala, the price may increase by Rs 5.
It was the central government that decided to import 150,000 tons of onion from Egypt. 20,000 tons in this will be brought here this week. The Metals and Minerals Trading Corporation (MMTC) is in charge of the onion import and NAFED is responsible for supplying it to the states.
