In Kutch -a district of Gujarat state in western India- over 150 growers are cultivating the vitamin-rich Dragon fruit. The fruit is being cultivated on approximately 300-350 ha of land.

Unlike other fruits, cultivating dragon fruit is not easy in India; it is largely grown in South America, China and Vietnam. To get to a great crop, a technique is used, growing the fruit in cement rings.

This method of cultivation was started at Asha Pura farms near Bhuj. Thakkar. There, a grower named Haresh Thakkar, started cultivating dragon fruit in 2014-2015, having learned the novel technique from Chinese and Vietnamese producers.

Getting inspired from Thakkar, other farmers in the region too followed suit. A large number of farmers in Bhuj, Gandhidham and Mandvi areas are now cultivating Dragon fruit and getting good returns.
