The Akoyan valley in Rawanduz is well-known for its grapes, with thousands of tons being produced in the Kurdistan Region every year. A local farmer claims to grow over 70 types of grapes alone.
“Right now, with the grapes that I produce, we have over 80 varieties. However, there are about 25 varieties that work well in our environment and give good results, and from those, twelve of them are the very best,” he said. “Each cluster weighs around 4 to 5 kilos.”
There are over 100 types of grapes produced in the Kurdistan Region, ‘Rashmiri’ grapes being the most notable of them. Approximately 35,000 tons of grapes are sold every year. 21,683 tons of locally produced grapes were sold in 2020.
