Since the beginning of the mango export season, nearly 65 tons of the fruit have left for the United States, and exporters are hoping for a good season ahead. In the domestic market, the arrival of mangoes from the Konkan coast has increased in Pune, leading to a price correction of nearly 30 per cent in the last few days. Arrivals from Karnataka, however, are yet to pick up, with traders hopeful that this will happen after May first week.
The supply of Alphonso and other varieties of mangoes in the wholesale market in Vashi has exceeded over 100,000 boxes. This has also resulted in a drop of its prices from Rs 500 to Rs 1500 per box. Traders say the supply is likely to increase as farmers are picking the fruits now, fearing rainfall amid the rising temperatures.
It has reported that, according to APMC officials, on Wednesday around 72,000 boxes of different varieties of Alphonso arrived in the market while other varieties were at around 35,000 to 45,000 boxes from Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh.
With the support of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industries (MAFI), the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA), as well as the Department of Agriculture (DOA), is currently distributing these much sought-after mangoes to key partners in the Klang Valley, Sabah and Sarawak and have also established cross border distribution in Singapore and Hong Kong.
It is quoted Joanna Ibrahim, CEO of airasia grocer as saying: “Last year, in collaboration with our sister company Teleport, we successfully utilized our aircraft to send the Harumanis mangoes to Sabah. Officially, this was the first time Sabahans got to enjoy and relish authentic Perlis mangoes. We are pleased once again to be given the opportunity to distribute the limited-edition Harumanis mangoes to new markets this year. The fruits entering the international market space is another milestone for us made possible by our collaboration with MAFI, FAMA and DOA. We are confident that all mango lovers will share our love for this sweet tasting, fragrant fruit.”
