Core Tip: Pig ears, which were sold in a market in Ganzhou city, Jiangxi, China, were found to be artificial, according to health officials. The fake ears have been developed from a combination of gelatin and the chemical sodium oleate.
This food scandal has been identified after a consumer purchased the product in a market in Ganzhou city. The consumer complained of a strange smell while cooking the product, and reported the incident to food safety officials earlier this month, reported China Daily.

The officials tested the ears and found that they were made from gelatin and the chemical sodium oleate, which is used in the production of soap.

While China's government has implemented steps to improve food safety, scandals continue to surface due to weak enforcement and illegal business practices.

Recently, the officials had started investigating reports that vegetable producers have been spraying formaldehyde solution to keep cabbage fresh, in the latest food scare to hit the country.
