EuroCan Marketing is recalling one lot of Barnsdale Farms®, HoundsTooth®, and Mac’s Choice® Pig Ears for pets because they may be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria. This pathogenic bacteria can affect animals eating these products and can sicken people who handle the ears. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this product.
The recalled product is individually shrink-wrapped, 6-pack, 12-pack, and 25-pack bags of Barnsdale Farms®, HoundsTooth®, and Mac’s Choice® Pig Ears. They were sold throughout the United States and Canada. The lot number of the recalled product is 84.
The potential for Salmonella contamination was noted after routine testing revealed the presence of the bacteria in the product. The company has suspended distribution while the FDA and the company investigate.
Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea that may be bloody, fever, and vomiting. Some pets may only have decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain. And other animals may have no symptoms at all but could be carriers. Pets can shed Salmonella in their feces, which can get on their coats. People then can contract the illness by petting the animal and not thoroughly washing their hands.
If you purchased this product, do not feed it to your pet. Throw it away in a sealed or double bagged package so other animals can’t eat it, or take it back to the place of purchase for a refund. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after handling this product.
