Core Tip: BrightFarms has entered into an agreement to supply local produce including lettuce, tomato, and herb varieties to A&P’s family of stores.
BrightFarms finances, builds and operates greenhouses at or near supermarkets, bringing the farmer's market to the supermarket.

In response to increasing demand for local produce, the company is building a multi-acre farm and a hydroponic greenhouse in Brooklyn, New York. The project will be built on 100,000ft2 of rooftop space.

A&P president and CEO Sam Martin said that partnering with BrightFarms is a phenomenal opportunity to provide the customers with the freshest, local, and most sustainable produce in the supermarket aisle.

"We are committed to being the number one food and drug store in the neighborhoods we serve, and this partnership gets us one step closer to achieving that goal," Martin added.

BrightFarms plans to start the construction of the greenhouse in September 2012.

A&P operates 320 stores in six states in the US, under the following trade names: A&P, Best Cellars, Food Basics, The Food Emporium, Pathmark, Superfresh and Waldbaum's.
