Changing the packaging from polypropylene to polythene enables the bags to be recycled, which otherwise would have been sent to the landfill, reported Fdin.org.uk.
This initiative will allow the company to feature industry-wide On-Pack Recycling Label on its onion packs. This decision was taken in co-operation with the government organization, WRAP, which promotes recycling and waste reduction in the UK.
In 2011, The Co-operative recycled more than 2,921 tonnes of polythene, including plastic gathered from recycling points at more than 1,000 of the retailer's larger stores, and used it to develop bin bags.
