Hamel Family Wines, a Sonoma Valley-based family winery that produces wines from estate-grown organically farmed grapes, has commenced construction work on its new estate winery, barrel storage caves and hospitality center.
Located at 15401 Sonoma Highway, the winery project includes a 7,500ft² winery, a 6,875ft² estate house and 12,000ft² caves for barrel storage, which are expected to open in spring 2014.
The winery, which will be located on the slope of oak woodland and manzanita chaparral near the foot of Mayacamas Mountains, will feature living green roof for fermentation. The barrel storage cave will be housed east of the winery to reduce the winery carbon footprint and provide cool temperature and increased humidity level for barrels inside.
Hamel selected San Francisco Studio of Gould Evans for the architectural design of the winery that is inspired by the scenic 124 acre site of Mayacamas Mountains.
Gould Evans architect Doublas Thornley said the idea of building the winery at the base of the mountain allows the winery to expand the vineyard to the east.
