Core Tip: Saim Impianti has been active in the refrigeration sector for 25 years, manufacturing and managing cold storage units for the agri-food sector.
Ozone sanitationSaim Service was created out of this company for after-sales services for refrigeration and post-harvest techniques.

Yuri Simonelli, sales manager of the Saim Group, explains the activities of the company.

"Our company was created in Fondi, in the Latina province (Lazio), because one of the main Italian wholesale fruit and vegetable markets is located in the area, which the centre between the production areas of the South and the commercialisation ones in the North. The proximity to producers, salesmen and operators means we are able to design and manufacture systems specific for different needs at a national level. Processing techniques are also dedicated to the improvement of conservation, the halving of weight loss and the extension of shelf-life."

"The needs of a continuously evolving market stimulate the company to be dynamic and innovative. We must be able to supply highly qualified, efficient services with competitive value for money."

In 2008, the Ozono-sanificazione (Ozone-sanitation) brand was created for the research, design, manufacture, installation, consulting and technical assistance of systems and machinery for the production and use of ozone. Research for new technologies, combined with the collaboration with national experimentation bodies, enables us to develop and test the use of ozone - which is produced 100% naturally from the oxygen in the air - in the agri-food sector. "The refrigeration systems we currently design are able to preserve the organoleptic qualities of the product from harvesting to consumption, naturally and without using chemical substances, all the while keeping an eye on energy saving."

"In this new context, the systems for the production of ozone we have produced and installed in warehouses all over the nation, combined with refrigeration systems with specific techniques - which control cold, humidity, ventilation and air distribution optimizing performances according to the product - enable the sanitation of the product both in cold storage units - rapid cooling, handling and storage - and during washing."

"All of this means we are able to avoid the many problems caused by rotten produce, mould, fungi and bacteria, the presence of ethylene (responsible for accelerated ripening), weight loss and inocula on the surface of healthy products. Thus, produce which is harvested in a suitable and natural way is stored until consumed, reducing economic losses which would be considerable without our techniques."

"In the current economic situation, it is possible to notice how operators are aware that the only way to stand out in such blocked markets is to find solutions to obtain a superior quality produce. All of this in turn means that we are aware of the fact we have to make inevitable decisions even in a situation that seems to discourage investments. We have noticed how many companies are in a sort of stand-by period, during which they are looking to improve organisation, balance their cost policy and innovate processing and commercialisation phases."

"As regards our own future activities, the need to innovate stresses how it's impossible to work without research. 2013 will be a fundamental year, during which we will have to find the energy to face future challenges. We will continue to do so, confident that the main objective must be continuous improvement. All of this will be possible if all of those in the sector work together," concludes Yuri Simonelli.
