Environmental activist group Greenpeace has named Canada’s leading consumer canned tuna company the worst among 14 companies when it comes to providing sustainable tuna to Canadian consumers.
The group, in its annual ranking of canned tuna companies, cited Clover Leaf Seafoods as the worst offender.
“Clover Leaf has become synonymous with ocean destruction in a can,” said Sarah King, Greenpeace Canada’s oceans campaign coordinator. “Until Canada’s biggest brand sources its tuna responsibly, Greenpeace is urging consumers to choose brands working to be ocean-friendly.”
The annual ranking is based on a study of retailers’ sourcing of tuna, whether the tuna comes from healthy stocks, or is caught using unsustainable methods such as fish-aggregating devices, and other factors.
This year’s report shows Clover Leaf is “not making progress toward eliminating destructively-caught tuna from their product lines.” The report said Walmart and Unico also have not progressed, but Raincoast Trading, Wild Planet, Safeway and Gold Seal are among the best retailers for sustainable tuna.
