Buffalo Trace Distillery in Kentucky has said it will not reduce the alcohol content in its bourbon to keep up with the demand, which is outpacing supply.
The distillery is known for producing brands like Blanton's, Buffalo Trace and Pappy Van Winkle.
According to the distillery, the bourbon must be matured in new oak barrels for at-least eight to ten years, and some for even 23 years. Moreover, some amount of bourbon is lost to evaporation each year. All these factors are behind the shortage of supply.
Buffalo Trace Distillery bourbon marketing director Kris Comstock said the distillery is making more bourbon every day.
"Waiting for the bourbon to come of age is the hard part. While we wait, there could be temporary product shortages, even on favorites like Buffalo Trace, and Eagle Rare," Comstock added.
"We won't take drastic measures to mitigate the shortages, such as raising prices excessively, lowering the proof or reducing the age of our whiskies."
The distillery, when encountered a similar situation earlier, had increased distillation, installed additional bottling lines, hired more people, and managed brands on allocation to prevent shortages.
Comstock assured that bourbon shortages from the distillery will be temporary, as new barrels are coming of age and are being bottled every day at the distillery, and will soon be stocked on liquor store shelves and bars.
