SurePure, a US-based liquid photopurification solutions provider, has partnered with University of Johannesburg to test the efficacy of its Turbulator technology to combat the prevalence of mycotoxins in beverages in South Africa.
Mycotoxins are a group of naturally occurring chemicals produced by certain molds and can cause a variety of adverse health effects in humans.
They can grow on a variety of different crops and be present in several products including milk, apple juice and coffee.
Turbulator uses UV-C light to purify microbiologically sensitive liquids such as wine, fruit juice and milk.
SurePure sales and marketing vice president Steve Miller said that the company has partnered with the university to solve the serious public health issue in South Africa.
"Now that we have found the right local partner, we are looking forward to pioneering this technology together in South Africa and continue to make strides towards enhancing our position as the leader in liquid photopurification," Miller added.
