Growing up with nut allergies can be extremely difficult, especially since children are often exposed to peanut butter or products containing traces of nuts. According to the New York Daily News, Natalie Giorgi, a 13-year-old girl from the Sacramento, California, area died at a summer camp after accidentally consuming a dessert that contained peanut butter. The Giorgi family was staying at a family camp called Camp Sacramento when Natalie ate a Rice Krispies treat that she didn't know contained peanut butter. The family was vigilant about Natalie's peanut allergy, but unfortunately the accident led to her untimely death.
Natalie's father, a doctor, administered epinephrine pens at the scene, but the young girl went into cardiac arrest and was ultimately pronounced dead at a hospital. The family released a statement encouraging the public to take food allergies seriously: "While our hearts are breaking over the tragic loss of our beautiful daughter Natalie, it is our hope that others can learn from this and realize that nut and food allergies are life threatening. Caution and care for those inflicted should always be supported and taken."
