Core Tip: Woolworths has rejected claims made by the major parties and the Greens that Woolworths and Coles have too much power.
Woolworths has rejected claims made by the major parties and the Greens that Woolworths and Coles have too much power. Throughout the election, the issue of competition between the two major supermarket chains has been raised by both politicians and farmers. But general manager of Woolworths Core Fresh, Ziggy Kwarcinski, says the Australian market is more competitive than it has been in years.

"The entrance of Aldi into the Australian supermarkets, Cosco, they're multinational companies that are probably twice the size of Woolworths," he said "They have a very, very powerful relationship with multinational suppliers."

Mr Kwarcinski draws attention to the fact that Woolworths is an Australian company and employs around 115,000 people. "We want to continue to grow and we want to make sure that we're as competitive as any new entrant into the market," he said.

Challenged with the notion that food is too cheap in Australia, Mr Kwacinski disclaims responsibility on behalf of retailers."When it comes to price, the consumer is the one who determines whether it is cheap or expensive," he said.

"Our approach is that we want to ensure that our supply chain is sustainable."
