Duckhorn Vineyards, a winery in Napa Valley, California, is set to launch a new winery, focused on Cabernet Sauvignon, in Washington.

The new winery will be the company's first project outside Northern California.

The proposed Washington winery, which will use grapes from Red Mountain, will launch its first product, a red wine from the 2012 Vintage, during Labor Day next year.

Duckhorn chief marketing and business development officer Carol Reber told Great Northwest Wine that the company is a little less than a year away from its inaugural release.

"Our roots will always be Napa Valley - that's critical to our success. But we like to explore new regions. There's no question that the wines in Washington are spectacular. We are particularly intrigued by the Cabs from Red Mountain," Reber said.

Based in St. Helena, California, Duckhorn was launched in 1976 with a focus on Merlot.
