The tips are still green, but the flavour is intense. Organic Uurú bananas from Ecuador delight consumers with an exotic sweetness which infuses the fruit even whilst the tips are still green. The particularly firm flesh of the Uurú banana makes it a uniquely satisfying treat for the palate.

The Uurú banana is a world first and a comeback, both at the same time. This variety of banana was recently rediscovered in Ecuador by agricultural scientists. From a botanical point of view, the Uurú banana belongs to the Cavendish family, whilst its flavour and consistency are more strongly reminiscent of the ancient “Gros Michel” banana.

Up to now, only a few select people have had the pleasure of enjoying Uurú bananas: the Uurú banana has been marketed exclusively since May 2013 by a company named Weiling, and sold in select health-food shops. “The response to the banana has been so positive that we’d now like to introduce it to consumers in other European countries,” says Ralph Fischer, marketing manager for the international fruit import company Weichert GmbH & Co. KG. The market launch will be supported by sales promotion campaigns which are tailored to the occasion.

The Uurú banana is certified in accordance with GLOBALGAP and EU organic standards. These organic bananas are grown in close cooperation with local producers in Ecuador. In 2012, the Weichert company teamed up with Xavier Lazo, an agrarian scientist from Ecuador, and his colleagues. Together, they have developed a vision: to make uncompromisingly organically grown Uurú bananas marketable. By actively sharing information and expertise, they have together developed a well-engineered production method which sets new standards when it comes to sustainability. An optimised and newly installed water filter system uses up to 50% less water than traditional cultivation methods. Only renewable energy sources are used. Less land is needed thanks to the layout of the banana plants. Weeds are used as natural fertilisers.
