GerSpanish strawberriesmany, France and the UK, with 68% of the total, are currently the main destinations for Andalusia's strawberry exports. The sector, based mostly in Huelva, represents around 95% of Spain's total strawberry production.

As reported by the Association of Producers and Exporters of Strawberries from Huelva (Freshuelva), Germany is the main importer for this fruit, as it receives approximately 34% of the shipments, followed by France, with 23%, and the UK, with 10.5%. In the latter's case, the percentage has grown considerably in recent campaigns.

The rest is distributed mainly between other European and Asian markets, although to a lower extent, with the main challenge being the promotion of trade with Eastern European markets.

To be precise, the sector exported a total of 223,813 tonnes of fresh strawberries and another 15,482 tonnes of frozen strawberries, valued at 400.1 million Euro.

The manager of Freshuelva, Rafael Domínguez, stressed the fact that "the sector must continually seek new markets for Huelva's berries," which is why it is so important to take part in fairs such as Fruit Logistica, held in Berlin last week.

An event where "Spanish strawberry producers had the chance to demonstrate their superiority over other producers and exporters, whose only advantage is their lower production costs."
