Foley Family Wines, majority-owned by US billionaire Bill Foley, has been fined with $30,000 for failing to provide safety procedures at a Martinborough vineyard.
Te Kairanga vineyard worker Chris Kokiri reportedly broke his arm last April when he was winding bird netting off vines on to a mechanical spindle.
Angela Graham, a lawyer representing the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, said Foley Family Wines should have under taken safety measures as per the machine's operating manual to avoid hazardous incidents to workers.
Masterton District Court judge Thomas Broadmore said Kokiri suffered a 'nasty injury', including two broken bones and damaged tendons, and needed skin grafts.
Broadmore added that Foley Family Wines did not carry out proper review after it bought Te Kairanga in 2011.
As per the judgement, Kokiri will get a compensation of $12,000.
