European Commissioner for Health and Consumer protection Tonio Borg has demanded a more strict approach towards food fraud in Europe. Reports the German website Proplanta.de.

"It is of utmost importance that the food inspections In EU countries should become more transparent for the consumers", explains Borg to the German newspaper 'Die Welt'. "Under certain conditions the Member States should be authorised to announce information about the outcome of inspections on separate companies and set up a 'rating' for this from which the consumer can get information about the procedures at retailers, restaurants or other companies.

In addition more unannounced inspections should be taking place on a regular bases and breaking the the food laws should be penalised significantly higher says the European Commissioner. The penalties should be at least as high as the profit they made with breaking these laws".
