Thanks to the mild weather in recent days, the demand for cucumbers in Germany has increased. Reports the German Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI) on their website. The many hours of sunshine have a positive effect on both the demand and the production. The number of German households now buying cucumbers is clearly increasing and is significantly higher than previous years.
As early as week 8, 17% of the households had bought cucumbers and in week 9 this number was increased with one more percent. Only in 2011 more cucumbers were bought at this time of the year. In week 10 cucumbers were on offer for 0.55 up to 0.69 Euro cents a piece in the supermarket chains. It is predominantly Spanish cucumbers that are mainly on offer. On the other hand goods from the Benelux have already been included in the standard assortment of food stores and discounters.
German wholesalers are more often switching to cucumbers from the Benelux and the domestic production. The prices at the auction in the Netherlands and Belgium have decreased considerably because of the obvious growing demand. Cucumbers from Spain and the Canary Islands can not compete with these special offers and are disappearing from the shops. The slowly increasing supply from German production will have to accept the low prices to be able to compete with the goods from the Benelux.
