Destileria Serralles, a Puerto Rican distillery that produces Don Q rum, has outlined plans to increase its production capacity over the next few years.
The expansion is in line with the agreements signed between the distillery and private investors to produce distilled spirits for sale in the US.
Puerto Rico Governor Alejandro Garcia Padilla said, "Destileria Serralles has signed new contracts enabling it to increase its production of rum in the millions of additional gallons in the next few years."
The agreements form a part of the government's strategy to restore sugar cane industry in the country.
As part of the expansion, Destileria will add around eight million gallons of capacity to the existing capacity, ranging from four million to five million staring this month.
Under a $170m project, farmers are expected to cultivate up to 8,000 hectares of sugarcane by 2016, reported The Associated Press.
