Mozambican c Tuna Companyompany Empresa Moçambicana de Atum (EMATUM), set up by the government for tuna fishing, is due to start operating this year.

Fishing Minister, Victor Borges said that between eight and eleven fishing vessels ordered in 2013 were due to be delivered by the end of June by French shipyard Constructions Mécaniques de Normandie. The vessels cost €300 million, reports MacauHub.

Mr Borges said that EMATUM, which is majority-owned by the government, will have its headquarters in Maputo but in the future would use the ports of Beira and Nacala.

The minister also said that Mozambique would try to get licenses from other countries to fish for tuna in waters outside of Mozambican jurisdiction.

He also noted that the EMATUM boats could also be used for line fishing of deep-sea fish species.
