After a good start for South Africa’s Sharon fruit season, Israeli company MOR International is also achieving good results with the south Thai Lychee campaign, which started in week 17 and will run until the first week of June. “Last year we had weather issues and we lost the majority of our production; however, this season the weather is good so we have the volume and quality for a good campaign,” explains Eran Nadler, of MOR International.

Sharon

The main destination for the firm’s lychees is Europe, where around 100 tonnes of south Thai lychee are expected to be shipped. The current campaign will be followed by the Israeli season with approximately the same volume. “We have some advantage, but competition in the lychee market will soon arrive from Mexico, which is a very tough competitor,” says Eran.

Regarding the current situation for Sharon fruit sales, Eran assures that although summer fruit will soon be widely available, at the moment the market for Sharon fruit is good, with good demand. “We have promotions with many supermarkets, to which we are supplying large volumes, and the fruit’s quality this year is excellent.”

The largest destination for MOR International’s Sharon fruit is Europe, although significant volumes go also to Canada and the U.S. (with the latter being a new market for the company this season), as well as to the Far East, (Singapore, Hong Kong, etc.) and the Middle East. South Africa’s domestic market is also covered. According to Eran, “Transit times are not a problem; by the end of the season, in August, we are still selling fruit even in Canada.”

The South African produce has also been tested as one of the sweetest. “Our fruit arrives just after the Spanish Bright Red, which is the largest variety in terms of volume, but has lower Brix levels than the South African fruit,” explains Eran Nadler. “Sharon fruit is still a niche product in South Africa, although it is a growing market, with the brand gaining popularity year after year.”
