After announcing that Mexico's production of green chillis had increased by 42.4 percent between 2013 and 2016, the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA) stated that Queretaro's chilli production had increased by 43.3 Percent, mainly in the municipalities of Colon, Pedro Escobedo, and Queretaro.

At the national level, "Made in Mexico" green chili production increased by 42.4 percent between 2013 and 2016, due to an increased modernization and productivity in the field, strategies promoted by the Government of the Republic in all agricultural crops that are generated in the national territory, SAGARPA stated.

Last year's production of green chilli, one of the main vegetables grown in the country and one Mexico's iconic foods, amounted to 2,922,000 tons. In 2013, production had amounted to 870,000 tons.

The federal delegate of the SAGARPA in Queretaro, Gustavo Nieto Chavez, said that according to data provided by the SIAP in 2015, the entity produced a total of 10,381 tons of green jalapenos, green peppers, and green serrano peppers.

According to the SIAP, in 2016 Queretaro produced 25,938 tons of these three crops in autumn-winter and spring-summer cycles, both in open fields and in protected agriculture. The municipality with the highest production was Colon with 6,125 tons, followed by Pedro Escobedo with 3,136 tons, and Queretaro with 2,767 tons.

32 States in the country produce this crop, the top five producers are Chihuahua, Sinaloa, Zacatecas, San Luis Potosi, Michoacan, and Queretaro, which account for 77.1 per cent of national production.

The entity that increased its production of green chilli the most between 2015 and 2016 was Campeche with 276.2 percent, followed by Nuevo Leon with 92.3 per cent, Zacatecas with 65.2 per cent, Baja California South with 52.3 percent, and Queretaro with 43.3 percent.

Production peaks from September to December, when producers obtain 48.2 percent of the total volume. During 2016, sales of chillis and peppers ranked fifth among the Agricultural food exports, with a value of 1,161 million dollars, i.e. 25.4 per cent more than in the previous year.
