The banana market has entered a quiet period. "Up to last week sales were good. Even before Pentecost you could see banana sales dropping, but due to the mild temperatures, sales have been good. Now sales will fall due to the vacation period. I expect it to be relatively quiet for the next six weeks," says Hans Maagendans from Banafood Services GmbH from Straelen.
"Now you have to keep an eye on your count so that there is not too much in stock. You can already see the suppliers responding to summer by sending in far less fruit," continues Hans. "The prices are now under pressure, especially on the open market. The Ramadan period will also affect the market because the people who participate usually eat a lot of bananas. During Ramadan this consumption decreases a great deal."
