The first Limburg pears are now in shops thanks to favourable weather conditions. The pears are two to three weeks early. The size and quality of the pears, as well as their large volume, is record breaking. The first pears are Corina’s, a variety branching from Conference pears, which are normally ripe three weeks earlier.
Corina pears are harvested over 100 ha by about 38 Limburg based farmers. The pears are sold in Belgium and Holland and exported by Bel Export to Great Britain and Scandinavia. 1.6 million kilos are expected.
Conference pears will be available for consumption over the next three weeks. 300 million kilos are expected, a real record.
Thanks to mild weather and enough rain, the harvest will be plentiful and the fruits juicy. Belgian production should be 8% higher this year.
