New Zealand grown Sonya apples are arriving in ten different export markets, and taking off in China, with strong sales and positive consumer reaction to the super sweet taste. “The real highlight to the 2015 Sonya season has been the consumer reaction in China,” said Freshco General Manager Glenn Pool. “Sales have been very strong and we are looking forward to continued growth in this market.”
So far Sonya apples have also been well received in the largest market, the US, due to the unique shape as well as the flavour, according to Mr Pool. “USA is still our largest market. We are partnered with Sage, a large Washington apple company, who have the rights to USA Sonya and do a great job marketing our fruit in their off season,” he told Fresh Plaza.
The Sonya, originally from Central Otago was developed out of the Nevis breeding program, and the variety is a cross between Gala and Red Delicious.
All together Freshco, based in New Zealand, expects to export 1400 tonnes of Sonya apples this season. Freshco has been working on commercializing and breeding the Sonya apple since 2007. The company has also confirmed a long term commitment to the super sweet variety, and to growing more acreage, following the positive consumer response.
