The mood in the chicory market is quite positive. This past May Gijs van Dongen from Nature's Gold said that growers would be 'in the black' this year, and he is still convinced of this, "We are not talking about a great year, but we are having a reasonable year."
Good mood
Gijs says that they had good prices the first few weeks of August due to lower production, "But then prices fell considerably. Currently the price is better, at one Euro. Last week the price was 80 cents and the week before that, 60 cents." Gijs has a good feeling about the upcoming period, "But you still have to watch out. Everyone expected that August would be bad and we still had a few good weeks. Now everyone expects September to go well, while in the past September was often a bad month. You can never completely predict what will happen. Still, I think the chicory will go for one Euro on average."
Less production
The holidays are over and production is back on track, "I have the feeling that right now there is less production than in past years around this time. Hence the high expectations. For the rest of this year it will depend on the volume and the demand of course. It will be exciting to see how the old and the new will connect."
