The Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan), in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG), continues with the implementation of agricultural projects, such as establishing the Healthy Avocado Seedlings Reproduction Project in Honduras, with the objective of boosting the national agricultural industry and benefiting producers in the departments of Intibucá, La Paz, Lempira, and El Paraiso.

The project, which accounts for $1,501,000 dollars, will be developed over a period of over 2 years and aims at producing an average of 35,000 Hass avocado seedlings per year and increasing avocado production in Honduras by at least 17 times, thus benefiting producers with better production costs.

The SAG has requested technical assistance from the Republic of China (Taiwan), given Taiwan's vast experience in the management and administration of seedling nurseries and plant pathology, so that the Honduran producers can supply the domestic demand for avocado.

This project is based in Santa Catarina Experimental Station, La Esperanza, Intibucá, and will be led by the Directorate of Agricultural Science and Technology of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG-ISSUED).

Avocado is a fruit native to Latin America. It has a high nutritional value and it is one of the main daily consumption fruits. The Honduran avocado market depends heavily on imports, which is why the price of avocado is so high and the average consumption per year is only 1 kg per person.

This experience will generate new opportunities for agribusiness in rural areas and it will involve small farmers in the management of technology, creating employment opportunities in the communities and significantly improving their income.

The ceremony where Ambassador Joseph Kuo and Minister Jacobo Paz will sign this project is going to be held tomorrow at 2:00 pm at the SAG premises.
