While food prices in Romania in December 2015 were 6.2 percent lower than in the same month of the previous year, there were still considerable price increases for certain products, such as potatoes, which became over 20% more expensive, according to data released Wednesday by the National Institute of Statistics.
Also, non-food prices rose by 1.95 percent. The most remarkable increases were those of utilities, namely gas and electricity, up by 7.46% and 5.16%, respectively.
In the foods category, canned vegetables and fruits also became more expensive than last year, with prices growing by 7.62%; meanwhile, fresh fruit prices rose by 2.95%. However, most foods actually became cheaper in 2015, with the most noteworthy drop being that of corn, which registered a 12.68% drop.
